- All new building approvals must comply with the new standard.
- Any property undergoing major renovations must comply with the new standard.
e.g. moving walls, installing a staircase, or building new rooms.

From 1 January 2027
- All domestic properties in Queensland must comply with the new standard.
The New Standard
- Smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom and in every hallway outside of a bedroom.
- All levels of all homes must have a smoke alarm. If no bedrooms are on that level the alarm should be installed in an egress area.
e.g. the lower level has no bedrooms so a smoke alarm should be located between the front door and the stairwell.
- All high set homes e.g. a Queenslander with an enclosed room under the house must have a smoke alarm installed.
- All smoke alarms must be interconnected either by being wired together, connected using wireless technology, or a mixture of these two technologies.
- All alarms must be either hard-wired 240V or have a non-replaceable 10-year lifespan lithium battery.
